Babysitter Checklist

Before you choose a babysitter for your children there are a number of important points you need to check, and it is best to carry out this check in person, so that you can meet the babysitter and get an idea of whether you think they will be suitable for your children or not.

References and Experience
It is important that the babysitter has had some experience looking after children, as they will be left on their own and in charge, and this experience could range from volunteering at children’s clubs and schools to looking after younger brothers and sisters. Check what age groups the babysitter has most experience looking after, as many people will be used to looking after toddlers and young children, but might not be so confident with newborn babies. If the babysitter is not a close friend or relative then you may feel more comfortable if you also ask for references from previous employers.

Specialist Training
You may also want to check if the babysitter is a registered child minder, and whether they have any relevant qualifications such as first aid and health and safety, and if your child has special needs it is important that you pick a babysitter who can meet these needs, and this may require some specialist training. You should also check whether or not the babysitter can drive and has transport, as you may need them to pick the children up from school, or take them to their evening activity clubs.

Health Restrictions
It is important that you check whether the babysitter has any health issues that may restrict them in their ability to look after children. For example if they suffer from mobility problems they may find it difficult to negotiate steep stairs, and if the children’s bedrooms are on the second floor this could be a major problem.
